is religious poetry valid as poetry or is it just another form of evangelism.
does tennyson use it in an evangelistic way?

of course i think anything can be good or bad poetry. does there come a time when it teeters on preaching?

I think tennyson was a canny poet that wrote a poem that could be read either with or without the christian symbolism. A non-christian could enjoy this as well and the take away could be love outlasts death.
