Living Nightmare

Sometimes when I lay my head,
Surrender to restful slumber,
I wonder if I will suddenly wake
In the body of a stranger.
Long red curls, maybe freckles,
A life of chaos and grief.
What I am was all a dream,
And suddenly I must face
Darker days and a scary world,
For this life was my safe place.

Wake up when the mermaid pierces
bicep with the foaming rolling tide
of wind, seashell shovel splatters.

Dirted eyes and snotted nose,
advil liquid aqua rose
feather marble purple cactus lather.

Drooling in your girlfriend's bed
withered, broken, underfed,
mucus muscle mesmerizing patter.

I had another nightmare
I hate the way they end
The way i bust out of there
So rude el ly awakened
It's a legitimate scare
Action adventure pretend
A game where I'm the main player
I just want to find out what happened
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

Nightmare Track

Strangest and almost latest
was this dream: recalled
to active duty, in full uniform
dining in mess halls, haircuts,
the whole nine yards.  Except...
it was all played for comedy
a sitcom from the Eighties.
Final scene: giving a briefing
on local hazards, drink and driving
with a stupid catchy slogan
(made up right in the dream)
then realizing how impossible
the situation was and waking
as the laugh track swelled.

Thirty minutes getting there
from church, twice that time
to find a parking spot, then heading home
thrice when forty
would normally do, and it's a Saturday night.
Don't call this asphalt "roads"
because roads connect, don't call this mass
of glass and metal "traffic"
because traffic moves.
