Jackpot

The butterfly effect—
little winning lotteries
leading me to you.
Attempting to draw the winning numbers
in life's great raffle,
I thought I was losing all along.
But it was one winning spin
after another,
hidden in the illusion of time,
adding up to you—
the jackpot of a lifetime.

I hate that I rhymed time with lifetime... but oh well. Maybe I can come up with something better there.

also didnt see the line requirements until now... oops.

Chosen by lot from among the Seventy
to again round out the Twelve
between the Ascent of the Son he serves
and the Descent of the Spirit he breathes
such that the Church states the Father had picked
Saint Paul instead, Saint Matthias claims
an awkward spot among the Saints.

The end of the month, I was short on rent
Two hundred dollars to be specific
When i was that young, who knows where it went
Maybe I squandered it nothing drastic
But I'd given up, packed up all my stuff
Ready to move out the end of the week
When John called me up I had just enough
To go to the boats, to gamble and seek
Escape in the game, a long drive with friends
And put it all in the first game I play
I dont know the rules whatever happens
'What now?' 'This pile of chips is yours' they say
Exactly two hundred my first hand wins
I walked away and never again
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

Doge Lotto

I sometimes wondered where
the US Constitution’s framers
came up with the College
of Electors to determine
who should be Chief Executive.

It seems that medieval Genoa
used systems similar to pick
their Doge (leader supreme)
in sundry steps the first of which
was choosing five new members
each six months from ninety
candidates for vacancies
on their Grand Council of
four hundred. Which voted on candidates for Doge

then vetted by the Minor Council
for final election by
the Grand Council again. Exciting, no?

They used to bet on those
five-of-ninety by-elections
which was so much fun
interim betting games
sprang up for those who wished to wager more
than twice a year.
And thence, at least in part,
come modern lotteries.
