Drag a deer in to a cave
and skin the carcass.
Sever the tailbone
and rub the hide with salt.
Cut the legs, the ribs,
and tender meats.
Let the walls speckle red,
brown, black, green.

Cave Painting
Mikey gives good head,
you know.
And Stacey hearts
someone called Joe.
Nirvana's gay,
and so is Nate—
his number ends:

Jackson wants
a fight with Brad,
when he's done
with Billy's Dad
Jenny's a slut
signed "Pepe, LOL",
it's written round
the glory hole.

Cave Magic
The thing about cave paintings
is not how good they are
(you know how it goes
the first time you try something
and it works,
it’s always fabulous)
but that somebody noticed
reality could be reduced
to what was seen
and reproduced: an aurochs,
wooly rhino, hunters
(those last only stick figures
lest their souls be stolen).
From there it’s such a short step
to symbols and enumeration
but to Plato
there’s no step at all:
come spring the painter
creeping up to light and all dimensions
from near-hibernation
ran back in and told his tribe
the miracle had happened
once again. But unlike Plato’s
not being chained within
they followed him outside
reborn.

A painting in a museum
Out of place, large white walls
To isolate and accentuate
Artistry, skill, individualism
We're in the place, a place
Of paintings. Meanings
Meandering the stale halls
Pale in comparison to the caves
Collecting dust on wooden
Dark corner candle lit space
A painting, a mysterious
Forest shrouding hills by falls
The lounging chair to wait
And headfirst asleep drop in
To disappear without a trace
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

Cave Paintings
most of them seem to be
bits of bravado;
some slaughtered beast
and a hunt
gleefully immortalized in Ochre
by a genius beta
taking dictation
from an idiot alpha
there's nothing to see here

Ochre and black
deep inside the earth,
who held the torch?
Who was the artist: a priest, a renegade,
a curious hunter,
or all three combined occasionally
in one ice age man or woman,
to signify their life
across the stone belly
of the earth.

how this cave still has its bulls
painted lightly on its surface
even as its walls have shrunk
back from the air intruding on
the earth that is its home
no one can explain,
neither the virgin crowned a martyr
revealed to have passed away in peace
nor the couple all-but-married
for a decade breaking up
Francisco Franco bombed this cave
once, or so Picasso painted
on his ever-shrinking canvas
even their most helpful image
of the Ever-Virgin Lady,
they had stolen, they had stolen
and the tree stump once obscuring:
how it rots, uprooted
