On the fourth day of Christmas, the Pig Pen gave to me
four vanished kids,
three religious pamphlets,
two cash gifts, and
a carol on a broadsheet.

one gay and sunny dawn
found themselves torn, their wide lands gone
and squatted on by Matt and John
and Dave and Cody. Joshua too,
the forward thinking redneck crew,
their squaws and spawn, with bright eyes blue
and golden heads like harvest corn.

There was murder somewhere there,
but their eminences were blind,
for no one seemed to mind -
not Dickens, not that Hugh Munro,
who spoke of humankind
‘s condition, and a lauded Pole,
who wept at the ruin of Europe’s soul -
but of the niggers’ genocide
no one seemed to mind.
Repeat. Replay. Rewind.

As a French revolution fan, I really love your use of those allusions to it, which are spot on.  I don't especially agree with the sentiment of the poem, but that doesn't stop me from being impressed with it.  Thanks for posting!

In Close Circles

in close circles
people still laugh
at racist jokes,

still keep family secrets hush,

still politely ask each other
if they're okay to drive

they still binge-watch 
cancelled westerns
on DVD and keep
secret Golliwogs
in secret closets

and yes,
they still have whispered conversations
about other people's children
getting knocked up
or bringing guns to school

it's what keep them close
