Dear Ms. Mitoh,
I could really use some glue,
something not seawater soluble.
I’m about to guillotine myself
but I’d really prefer not to.
I can feel the breakage stirring.
You try living with your slowly dying body
for three weeks.
You’ve obviously never lost a limb.
Imagine having the ghost of a whole body
haunting you day after.
I like my parasites
And have you met any of the ones
with brand new bodies? Idiots.
Don’t let them think
it doesn’t affect your brain.
Yours, Elysia marginata

How a hat saved a species:
pesticides weakened eggshells,
endangering peregrine
falcons, so from March to May
we court the males everyday.
Imitating the females
ultimately convinces
them to use the hat designed to catch their semen.

One X Many Zap
Personality transfer isn’t difficult
with 1950s technology: all you need
is two very large bell jars
one control panel with a big knife switch
and a Van de Graff generator.
When properly connected
(sabotage is possible)
sparks crackle
spotlights on two sometimes-human
subjects in the jars
flash and if budgeting permits
change Technicolor to confirm
whose mind ended where.
How has that process changed
in sixty years?
Mainly that today it’s one-to-many
(one Opinion Leader, many followers)
and it’s accomplished
sparklessly and wirelessly
through Facebook-Meta
and it’s real.

Teens take it some kind of science to kiss
someone for the first time or to touch
parts that would normally earn them a smack
or worse, while grown-ups call it qualia
when it ain't enough just to hear or read about something,
so take every time you move a second ahead
or an inch away from yourself merely to see
the boy you like at a different degree
as an experiment. The hypothesis?
"Someday I will grow out of this."

Non-Newtonian
It was our second date
and we got high
and played with corn starch.
She mixed it in a bowl
with warm water
and we watched it
perform miracles
in our hands;
balling up,
then bleeding out
then balling up again.
Demanding the sort of attention
only courtship provides.
