Silver mine, most of the ones I saw were silver mines. I've been in a number of ghost towns. They were great when I was a kid, but they were already getting looted and destroyed by "hoodlums" aka teenagers 
I guess the tour guides were there to keep people from messing with them even more. They always told us not to go inside the buildings, implying it was not safe, but I think it was probably about trying to keep it as pristine as possible.
