Jen and Courtney broke it off
some time ago. You gave their latest record a listen
and thought somehow the latter fell off the ladder, she let
the fame get to her head, but really
it had been brewing for a while,
or rather it had never
been brewing at all, relationships that fail
are rarely vats of beer or pots of tea,
and you just never knew
how light the two could be.

I never expected to be a ladder,
For the ball did not foretell.
When you find you are successful,
This diagnosis can't be quelled.
Symptoms include:
Growing a nemesis to climb you
Disguised as a sudden friend,
A prognosis for human joy
Because that too will have an end.
A sudden fall while standing high,
Caused by a bad choice,
When little lips around you
Secretly rejoice.
The diagnosis "ladder"
Is a hard truth to swallow,
And those same yapping lips
Will scorn you as you wallow.
Quick little poem i threw together... but don't have time right now to iron out the wrinkles. Might come back to it and play around.

I hear about it all the time
It's easy to fall down the stairs
Not necessarily a crime
Unless of course it comes in pairs
It's easy to fall down the stairs
Especially when in your prime
Unless of course it comes in pairs
0r someone's down to make a dime
Especially when in your prime
With every step your body dares
Or someone's bound to make a dime
No friends or family who cares
With every step your body dares
Higher payoffs as you climb
No friends or family who cares
No waiting for your bell to chime
Higher playoffs as you climb
You can't control arthritis flares
No waiting for your bell to chime
Or cracking necks on backs of chairs
You can't control arthritis flares
Not necessarily a crime
No cousins waiting for what's theirs
I hear about it all the time
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

Run-aways
Not hard to connect
pull-up ladders which
defended Pueblo cliff-side
cities from invasion
with iron fire-escapes
which festoon tenements
five centuries later:
both utilized for flight
from foes they couldn’t fight.

You grimace
then smile
while taking
the stairs
feeling
the irresistible
gravity
of being
human.
