Cutting snowflakes on the dining room table,
safety scissors snip as marshmallows melt
into cocoa, Vince Guaraldi sparkles the keys
behind a children’s choir.

Roll the tape into a loop and stick it to the back,
hand it to your father and watch him press it to the wall
well above your reach. Walk past the tree and presents
and see the empty stockings on the mantle.

What does tomorrow bring?

Fake icicles,
sliver plastic strips,
the last thing before sitting back
and looking for flaws
in lights and ornaments,
adjusting wires
and another sit down
until color makes a festival of
faces and electricity.

There is a Season

each year
the crucifix

becomes
the manger

around that
birth and death

my life

Topper

The star atop my Christmas tree
is in a way traditional
it has five points (or strictly, arms)
for it is an echinoderm
not large or gaudy, once a gift
when I was poor and satisfied
with simple bargain ornaments
but that starfish has since become
familiar and commonplace
while staying, typically, a pun.

Holiday Decorations

1.

Go as slow as you like,

                     we can’t fake the sunrise—
so, with the least possible effort

               I’ll be human,
for a while.

2.

The pulse that coats my insides
                          coats my
                outside, too.
My stomach shares my mouth
       with my fingernail

3.

All the codes break in your eyes
until my heart turns into butterflies.
