Ignorance

Medieval people couldn’t know
the deadly synergy of rat and flea
blaming Wandering Jews instead
as Black Death ravaged them.

Nor did they know that Jews once domiciled
would become that apex danger
the vicious creature which, attacked,
defends itself.

Vorarephobia

He's was a big boy
and could handle himself
quite well in a fight--
so long as it was fair.

It made his mother nervous
and his father secretly proud.

Neither imagined
their boy saw rows of teeth,
foaming fangs
and giant swatting paws
on every street,

at every bus stop,
every hot dog stand,
in every awkward shaking of hands.

He never told them.

They wouldn't have got it
and worried themselves sick.

Grandma why do you have so many cats?
Well you know mitzi and Benny and boo,
But then Cheryl died and left me hers so that's
Six, then mitzi had kittens, twice. I knew
I should have had her fixed, I didn't think -
All this just happened so fast! Then maybe
I got a little depressed from the stink
And all the money already on rabies
Vaccines I just started letting them stay
If they showed up on my doorstep or yard,
And now there's just so many, it's okay
Because life is already just so hard
And at least I have a hundred kittens!
I mean, I don't really NEED a kitchen...

Behind how modernity
remodels Jew-hatred
or the Palestinian
suffers dispossession
lies the same system,

a serpent that enjoys
its tail as an endless
other, then starves
at the surfeit or bursts
at the bend.

If dog is mankind's best friend
then who is canine's?
I dare anyone to say man
reciprocates that loyalty.
In the individual case, o yes:
14,000 years ago, a couple
and a puppy were buried together,
given the same burial rites.
We've been loving them for a long time,
at least those of us who can see
that dogs most determinedly
deserve a response in kind.
