Pigmas 25 December
#1
On the first day of Christmas, the Pig Pen gave to me
A Carol on a Broadsheet!

Today's prompt: post a Christmas poem. Remember that you could just post something written by someone else as long as it's been published in a public space and you credit the authors accordingly.

"I knew Santa wasn't real
since I was five.  I saw you
outside sweeping the reindeer
food off the porch." "But you were
always so excited!  I'll
never forget the squeals. Who
knew, what would your mom say?" "Dear
God, dad, we both did it for her!"

Fake Santas

There was no need
to pull on Santa's beard;

it was nicotine-yellow
and stunk of stout--

I knew a real beard
when I saw one.

But, Holy Christmas
his clothes were tacky;

all those bits of felt
glue-gunned onto velour--

Dad would never
dress like that.

Christmas Legacy

There is in the Christmas story
lightness and depth belying
its blatant (to sophisticates)
pagan antecedents–
Herakles son of Zeus
strangled serpents in his crib
performed great deeds
and ascended, deified–
but Zeus never saw his world
through newborn eyes
nor died in pain with only faith
assuring him of death’s impermanence.
Eastern transmigration?  Yes–
but with purpose rather than
mere merit.
