I'm glad you mentioned losers, Leanne. Because it's nice to know that somewhere in the world, though I can't afford to go there, there are women that still think people like me are worth mentioning.

The problem I have with poets these day is that there are too many. Any wisecracking college kid can take a course in creative writing and come out on the positive end of an assembly line. I know poetry as entertainment is just as valid as religion as fiction. But I believe poetry should be just as snobbishly practiced by poets as religion is by monks. By monks in the 13th century. But the real snobby poets are so obsessed with being intellectual and not sounding foolish that they produce only bloodless brain cells. And I for one find brain cells a great hindrance to my art.

i must say, i have never really thought about this before. i can't help thinking that it doesn't really have anything to do with the area of skill or skill level, but rather the individual. some people just think they are superior: 'dick heads' i think is the technical term for them. there is possibly a more noticeable number of these types in poetry simply because poetry isn't very popular, and there is this perception of poetry as being somehow intellectual and grand and heavy and deep and niche, etc. a catalogue of attributes that are going to attract a certain type of person: dick heads [not exclusively, of course ].
actually, the more i think about it, how many famous poets are known for their good character and virtue of humility? didn't most of them die face down in a puddle of their own self-absorbed misery?

anyway, there's also a bit of a poetry/geek crossover... and you know how those cats can be.
