key Canadian anti-prostitution laws overturned.

Quote:A judge in Ontario has overturned key Canadian anti-prostitution laws, finding they force sex workers into the streets at risk to their safety.

She ruled with three prostitutes who had challenged bans on brothels, pimps and solicitation.

Justice Himel found national laws banning brothels, forbidding solicitation of clients, and banning Canadians from managing sex workers as pimps or madams violated a provision of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaranteeing "the right to life, liberty and security".

the ruling might be challenged but either way my question is or should be obvious.

are laws concerning prostitution moving fast enough or too fast.
should it be legal or left on the streets.

personally i feel it should be legal and licensed. with premises allowed in collective area such as they have in Amsterdam. (though it is well spread out) i think the pimp will still be there no matter what's done. though large prison sentence may help alleviate them. it could be engineered that the woman is licensed and has to be the one to licence the premises she uses.

i think we definitely need to stop the practice of seeing a prostitute as something nasty.

I agree about legalizing it. You're never going to stop it so lets ensure as few people as possible get hurt doing it.

I also agree about de-stigmatizing it. A building labourer is "selling their body" just as surely as a prostitute. And sex is something most of us will engage in thousands of times so it's hardly a big deal.

where would you locate the knocking shops or windows. would you have them in a central place. in town? out of town.

you made a good point about the laborour. in many ways we all get pimped sooner of later. an added thing would be that if they legalised it a lot of the woman if employed could claim medicare and benifits etc. all it takes is someone with the juice and cash to open a leisure centre for sex and pimp them a lot fairer than many of them are being pimped now. better still if they were all self employed.

in the dam for instance, many of the girls work from behind windows and people just walk by and have what they wish. it's also a great tourist attraction.

Brothels already exist, so if they were legal then presumably they could just continue to exist in the places in which they currently are.

And yeah, the woman would get social security benefits, but they'd also be paying taxes so I wouldn't see it as increasing costs to the community. If anything, freeing up police time and depriving criminals of a particular revenue stream would probably be a net financial win for society.

I like the idea of having licensed prostitutes, to make them, legally, self-employed professionals. Aside from health insurance that will help them protect themselves and their customers, legitimacy will also make the profession safer in general as a lot of the bad rap it gets from being a dangerous profession comes from them being forced to do their jobs in seedy places.
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

I'm sure we all agree that prositution is not going away ever ... it's huge in demand. I agree, it needs to be made legal for the sake of the women involved. I see it as a means to help keep the women safer, healthier, and to allow them a sense of pride in their work. Perhaps having government brothels would be the answer to eliminating shanties and abuse towards the women. The woman would have a safe, clean enviroment to work from. It could be set up very classy (just a thought).

i agree. if prostitution or brothels are made legal, the trouble with the pimps will still be there, if not worse. many of the women in the dams shop windows are pimped, with one guy running a string and getting most of the proceeds. i don't think they should be gov run but they should definitely be under the govs jurisdiction with regular inspections etc. at present in most countries prostitution is seedy and tacky. a man or woman goes to a prostitute and it usually divorce.

i think if dealt with correctly that could be reversed. somebody could go to a brass shop as part of a treatment plan. the same way couples go to love doctors. far fetched but who knows.

anyway, back to the pimps. while the offer the girl some protection against physical attack it's not what you call fair. the gov could allocate each group of premises a minder and yes i know they would be like pimps. the difference would be they'd only get a small percentage of the takings. they could make sure hat people hired to help run establishments were genuine employees and not out and out pimps. jmo

I like the idea. Something like social workers or cops replacing the role of the pimps, except with the girls being self-employed professionals. They could even organize brothels like a cooperative.

definitely. and the brothels must pass certain standards, the same way restaurants do via health and safety
