It depends what I'm thinking about, I expect. I shall have to spend the day wondering now
But I do know that I spend an irrational amount of time picturing "worst case scenarios" in my head, when the only words are those spoken by the players, so for the familiarities of day-to-day life (real or imagined) I would have to say no, words are secondary. However, for abstractions and vagaries, which I also spent a (far more) irrational amount of time on, there is no alternative but to think in words. Some are not pretty words, especially when I'm contemplating the actions of politicians
