It's sounds from the tone of your post that you'd like to meet E.T. So would I. And I think, at heart, so would most people. So couple a yearning that seems to be fundamental to man with some unusual phenomena and "...I'm sure it was an alien..." isn't so hard to understand.
And lets not forget we live in an age of reality television--people line up to dress in diapers and eat live cockroaches to get their face on TV--and "confessing" to having seen something nobody can ever really prove you didn't see is a much less embarrassing way of getting your picture in the Daily Star.
