agree with touchstone, that might also be an interesting emotional angle to explore 
I do admit that I've never met anyone who has done or is doing that kind of hard time so I can't claim to accurately imagine what's in their head... but I suppose you're free as a writer to interpret it with that "gentle beast" angle if it really does ring true for you.
