The latino residents of Arizona aren't necessarily the sons of immigrants.
When California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas became US territories at the end of the Mexican-American War, there were approximately 80,000 latino residents, comprising about 20% of the population. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) guaranteed the property rights of formerly Mexican citizens in the transferred territories. These original residents became US citizens through annexation.
