I have experienced something like this before. You need to do some research, their programs out their for Linux that will take the whole portion and break everything down, and search for mime types of files and put them together. These programs, I do believe, some cost up to $10000 and aren't pirated, others are licensed under GPL.

My suggestion to prevent this is to buy two drives and mirror them, and send the drive to the manufacture for repair of the drive. If this occurs, turn the computer off right away, take out the drive, and place in multiple plastic bags to keep from receiving static electricity.
