I disagree.  Not a case of length over strength, more, that letting the atmosphere build beats exposition - even disguised exposition.  Coming along nicely.

Aside:  I always wonder about the (mythical) Aegis.  It's the severed head of Medusa, hung at Athena's chest as part of her panoply.    Then how could anyone, even Mars, stand against Athena when it would turn him to stone?  All use mirror shields?  Would mirror shades do it?

Pan (the other god who got involved in war) was more situational:  when the natural spirit takes over in place of discipline, fellowship, or blood-madness, Panic results and the losers flee.

I don't think he was being serious - and if he was he is most likely not my target audience.
