Impressions
#1
I am a musician and this is a poem I wrote about jazz entitled “Impressions”

I am Charles Mingus.
I am John Coltrane.
Music is my blood
And my veins bass strings.
Thumping, pushing, forcing ahead my heart
And it beats with resound.
My fingers force the keys down
And the sound is a fracture of beauty and truth
And the harmony guides me structureless.

I am freedom.
I am everything.
I call to the birds
And they say nothing.
They motion me skyward
And with them I fly.
The stars are my home
And my home is gone
And with them I fly.

I am Eric Dolphy.
I am Andrew Hill.
I am awake and I am alive and I understand
And I am returned with the wild roaring and beating
And I too roar and beat
And I wail and shout and sing
And I cry out and dance impassioned

Our song will never end
Because we are singing life.
