Theoria is the goal, praktikos the mode
by which the goal is reached, to be active is to bow
so low and so long your forehead gets caked
with dust like the floor to the side of your bed,
your lungs begin to drown in their own milky fluids,
your stomach burns, your young knees buckle,
and your soul rises pure---the darkness envelops
ready to respond to genithito fos---
only, of course, your beard is too long,
your skin is too brown, your houses that have stood
five times the age of their country too old,
too better-off-bombed, your religion too Heathen,
your tendency to think before you speak too Christian,
and, worst of all, your Jesus is a Jew.
