In essence, every human
ought to be a monarchy
ruled entirely by some other.
However, every person
is an aristocracy
with the spirit master,
the soul devoted knight,
and the body servant.
Between friends or lovers,
one must be democratic,
all the power held
by the elder or beloved
fully volunteered. And here the structure
recurs, with progenitors despots,
neighbourhoods stratified,
and each city the equal
of any other.
For ethics, kings;
for aesthetics, lords;
for politics, electors.
Once rule is determined
by the depths of one's pockets,
once tastes are measured
by head-counts or sales,
once one man is granted
absolute power
over everyone else
while courtesy acknowledges
betters other
than the uncreated,
then the person is consumed
and the world collapses.
