Slow Smoker
Cut celery sticks
rest bundled in my fridge
awaiting cutting up for soup
or slathering with peanut butter
for a snack. However...
Left too long
remaining stalks begin
despite their frigid environs
to oxidize and brown
at both ends:
nature’s green cigars
burning oh, so slowly
as they generate not red-eye coals
or flaking ashes but a nameless
limpid residue.
