And For Other


Cowboy boots once had
a special purpose: heels
and arches iron-reinforced
for stirrups, peewee profile
fitting spurs, high sides
for breasting sagebrush.

Now they’re repurposed
as a statement, like
cowboys themselves.

Not unlike the neckerchief
bandana once affected
to protect the neck from sun
and chaffing wind
or (when raised) to save
a cowboy’s face from blowing sand

or recognition, much as
Congress-critters
when they set out to rob
entitle their Acts
“...And For Other Purposes.”
