The cat pursues the rat
the dog protects, only the dog
she always cared about the cat
whose hissing and scratching is less towards
her nemesis the rat than to herself,
she could never by her nature
have the dog alone, not as a plaything
like the rat but like a bowl of milk
or a bed on some high corner as something
she, the cat, could never live without.
Instead, the cat, she had to learn that she
could live without the dog, the dog that she
couldn't live without the cat, and the rat
that she would have to live with both.
