The Irrational Dozen


It’s all the fault
of those wedge-writing Babylonians
with their number system
based on twelve.
Any fool can see there are
four seasons at most
and five visible planets
epicycling away.
Moon-months get so badly off
from twelve per annum that it takes
a dedicated wizard to decide
how many fudge-days this year.
No wonder that this soup
of history brothed mystery
and hence astrology
because making sense
of irrationality
soon turns to numerology
and thence to fortune-telling
spirituality.
