I still have my first typewriter
a gun metal gray Smith Corona
with forest green keys, and a dent
on Smith. It sits beneath my desk
an old pet that can no longer walk
that I don’t have the heart to put down.
I bought it used by persons unknown
but I use it no more except as a memory
solid as its steel, bright afternoons
when poems were green as its keys
and solid as its paper borne words.
Like me, it’s obsolete, but concrete
a fragment of a life not yet complete.
