were wide-spread
I used to pretend I had
one of the early clunky phones
when driving, by holding up
(for everyone to see)
an old telephone handset
with the cord attached
to nothing.
When someone leaned out
of their car's window
to ask how it worked, I replied,
"sssh, I'm on the phone."
