I used to wear huaraches year round,
those wonderfully primitive Mexican sandals
with soles made of old tire tread,
supposedly soaked in used car oil
to give the leather its forever life.
I still remember the slap of the solesÂ
on pavement and linoleum,
my pride to walk in the same shoes
as the unconquerable Mestizos.
I gave them up when my feet collapsed
and now wear the slippers of Kung Fu fighters
with special inserts to keep my in-step propped up.
But it's not the same feeling to be walkingÂ
like a man from China who's lost his way.
