7th Annual Poems About Suicide Month
#26
Da Martial Law Blues

If I should hang myself today
what kind of statement would that be?
"Oh, that kid was struggling with

depression", in the end
is how I'd be remembered, but at least
if I do it right, I'd feel far less

than if they catch me scrambling for my keys
a minute after curfew, take me in
and don't inform even their lieutenants,

then strap me down, hook me up
to a car battery, cover my face
with a damp towel, pull out my nails,

scourge me with barbed wire---
Martyr or suicide, either way
I'll be broken, I'll be mad,
like my glorious nation.
