Ode to a forensic accountant

At last he spotted a single entry
where there should've been a double
and then the balance sheet's inventory
of flattering financials spelt trouble.

They called him a bean counter and laughed,
the dazzling boys of marketing,
from bald Darren to that mean bounder
old Neal (no hero of Mafeking
but a political shrew, who grew and grew
till it was his turn to flounder).

They called him devoid of that sparking wit
only Strategy boys possess
with their two-by-twos, and other such shit,
these inheritors of Moses
and his vision of the future. Not rigour
but poetry makes their paychecks bigger

They called him a ho, the acolytes of Joe,
while Chris's coup de grace
was 'thou be'est balled', while Darren, bald,
merely sniggered in place.

But woe alack, this diligent old
accountant saw to his glee
black misfortunes the numbers told -
all for a single entry!
Bring out the lion, bring out the bruin,
bring out the infantry!
But nothing can stop the balance sheet's ruin
from a daft single entry!!
