Songs Diverse
Some sing, “Oh come, oh come, Immanuel!”
and mean it, those who think they live in Hell,
that having God With Us is just the thing
to sooth their pain of life without a King.
They will not understand what Heaven’s not:
no truncheon-wielding seraphs primed to spot
and punish deviation from the Word
sung in loud unison - why, that’s absurd.
Instead, true Heaven’s choral harmony
in endless variations, rhapsody
of unsubsumed rejoicing ‘round the Throne,
displays each voice, together yet alone.
And Heaven on this earth can only be
composed of individuals, each free
of domination by aspiring men
whose goal is ruling Hell by sword or pen.
