Striving (Inspired by The Girl-Fish)
Spoiled by her gift of beauty and her folks’
indulgence, poor girl’s heedlessness decants
her with sad creatures in a sunken world
with no escape except through dangerous
employment by its fallen queen. She learns
of other creatures’ virtues, and her strengths:
invention, to endure and fascinate.
This girl returns, surrendering her prize,
restores those fallen souls, uplifting them
to light and life. Almost by accident,
she finds her beauty’s curse may be redeemed
by service, striving and shared memory.
