After flood sidewalks
reappear clay-scabbed, mud-packed,
trooped with reminders:
coal-orange cones forgotten,
skewed sawhorses graze at large.

Yes, there’s a gap,
a drop. That next step’s
a doozie. You could twist
an ankle, break a hip
if so inclined and aged.
But here’s this sign, so
if you do any of those things
or just bust your keister
on this wet or oily
icy, shaky,
optically elusive bit of
seeming simple flatness,
