Great display of writing here, thank you all! From the paddocks to the woks, war chant at a wedding, women made of clay, pies and sushi, the Pink and White Terraces, and hurricanes - yes, that's NZ!
Manapouri
First thing we knew, the deal was set in stone;
the government approved a brand-new plan
to dam an upland river. On our home
a lake would grow, a benefit to man,
with hydro generators under walls
producing power, free, for industry
(or all but free), and with it came the calls
for workers - ‘You can start immediately’.
Accommodation problems meant the cost
of giant ships, world cruisers, for the crew.
Ensconced in luxury, off-shift, they watched
primeval land attacked, then built anew.
The value of a pristine place, wiped out?
We’ll pay for this forever, I’ve no doubt.
