Can I say that I applaud you for your boldness, but would rather have my own clique?
I'm going to PM select individuals and get them to join.
But as fellow clique masters, we need to be sure that we aren't being conned into accommodating double dippers.
So let's be transparent about who's teaming up with whom.
Fellow swine, I have much to offer you, such as the chance to bet on the outcome of last year's Melbourne Cup on YouTube.
Ray, on the other hand, can only give you cat food. I'm sending my letter by owl. Please check your rooftops.

The problem with inviting people is that they can reject you. My way is SO much more cliquish as I get to do the rejecting.
And now you're "forming" your own clique? -- You're just mad because I rejected your application.

And back on-topic:
The problem wasn't referencing a poet, it was not providing any specific comparisons -- a few lines would have been enough.  
Not doing that is the equivalent of saying you like a poem and not giving the reason why.
( ...and critiques shouldn't contain pompous beer-buddy narratives.)
