Before Canada implemented the GST (first at 7%, later reduced to 5%) at the point of sale, Canada had a much higher manufacturers' levy (at 11% to 12%) that was collected at the pint of manufacture, or the point of import (Canada customs). That tax was replaced by the lower GST, which caused a significant reduction in Canadian consumption taxes.

Yes we do and yes it does. There is no reason that I can see for the tax to be charged other than someone wants an extra cut for the privilage of makeing a purchase with money that has already been taxed.

i'm of the belief that vat is an underhanded way of charging you more income tax through a back door while at the same time slapping you about the head and laughing about it.
