But like Bena said, there is sometimes that fear of being accused of plagiarism. But at the end of the day, if one hasn't plagiarised then it is justifiable to leave out the footnotes. And we should repect the intelligent reader for being able to tell the difference. If they can't then maybe it is the author that needs to work on their delivery.
