I think milo's explanation of allusion is one of the clearest and most succinct I've ever:

"If you mention Judas, you are /alluding/ to the stories (mostly biblical) about Judas, not Judas directly.
If you mentioned a sack of silver for a kiss on the lips you would be alluding to Judas."

Thanks. It was after this thread that btrudo asked to be banned which is too bad. I was looking forward to him explaining alliteration to me(?!)

He was back in a few other personas, you know ones that argued for the sake of provocation.
