Did all the participants have the same native language? If so it'd make sense that the mistakes they made came from their own language, making it easier for speakers of that same language to understand the convolution of the new one. Like how French speakers say "I am agree" instead of "I agree" (from the French "Je suis d'accord") because that makes more sense to them.
Oh and we all spoke English, but it wasn't a first language for all of us. The study was mostly concerned with the evolution of the English language in particular.
