You mean a synonym or are you suggesting poets avoid abstractions (like hate, beauty, truth, insanity, courage, reverence, etc.)?
an expression that portrays the word. and yes, i do think poets should avoid abstractions without context, such as those mentioned, unless they're vital to the poem.

what can i say...i'm silly. and yes a simile (not a synonym though) or metaphor or other poetic device if it does the jobby. but not (the word)
