Out of Russia
Beneath red snows new fallen, I lay still,
Envied by Persephone,
Awake, with lips lamenting,
Under horse reeking fangs
Tarnished by a thousand days of hunger sated.
I reach and clamber out
From mound to mount coal black, with bloodied hair,
Unmatched by bounding moon and star.
Little do they matter -- fiery bird and pilfered apple --
When with envy kin leave kin to cool
On yellow leaves spread thin, while beast
Lightly lifts me, and bears me
From deep wounds to home and the gifts he’s given me.
