The sword
The sword that pointed north
leaned towards warmer ports,
where grained hearts of manhood
roamed In hallowed halls of sport.
Blunted by betrayal that thrust,
and sprang from loins of trust.
The voyage and victory, grief
smothered and laid up in the dust.
Locked down, denied an edge,
goaded by a wooden pledge,
a threat burned and etched
on arms uplifted to the ledge.
Where blinded thumbs oppose,
hunger bloodied in the final throes.
De-humanised, the act is maximised.
The frozen abeyance held pose.
Well oiled, a machine of precision.
A passion, a destiny decision;
the baying silenced, the senate
re-heartened with grainy vision.
