Not too long ago, I took a trip from California to Italy. I was in Accademia in Florence to see the Statue of David when I came across this quote:
“In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.” - Michelangelo
Which led me to write this, much much later. Basically, it's about how we have very little control over what happens in our life and what kind of people we become. As people, we are the total sum of all the experiences and events that have occurred over our lives. It's about the effect that people have on your life, chipping away at you, challenging the concept of who you think you are, and essentially making you who you are. Your true self was trapped inside the slab of marble the whole time, waiting to be freed. Thanks for taking the time to hear me out, guys.
You are a block of marble. You are solid and rough, unhewn.
Even you are unsure of what form you'll take.
As hammer strikes chisel, you lose pieces of yourself.
You crumble helplessly into dust and float delicately to the floor.
Hundreds of hands take their turn with utter disregard, chipping away at you, breaking you down.
The remnants of what used to be you collapse and cling to the creases in their hands, remnants that can never be washed away.
If you could have only one thing, it would be to make yourself whole again.
Little did you know, those rough walls and intimidating boundaries were trapping you inside yourself.
As you crumble away and the dust settles, everything becomes clear. Your final shape and form is distinct, unforgettable.
You realize that you were meant to lose all those pieces of yourself, because now you're left with only what was strong enough to withstand the pressure of the outside world.
Strong enough to resist the cruelty and carelessness with which that hammer and chisel chipped away at you.
Your weakness crumbled away, and when the dust settled, you were set free.
