I think it's like any poetry, or art in general for that matter -- there's good stuff, bad stuff, good stuff that we don't particularly like, bad stuff that appeals to us anyway...
Poetry is, as far as I'm concerned, supposed to be heard as well as read -- so I don't really see spoken word as a separate entity. I love Henry Rollins with an unholy passion and go along to see him whenever he's in Australia, plus I go to poetry readings when time permits (though some poets I'll only go and see once, and wish I hadn't!).
