refugee camps off mainland australia?

this is not me having a digg because of the other thread Hysterical

instead of the boat people going to auz, plans have been drawn up that they'll more or less be stopped mid stream and sent to papa new guinea and another island which will be used as holding pens. the argument goes, if we send them there, the sea crossing won't be as dangerous for them. some are up in arms calling the islands nothing more than prison camps. what are your views/

here's a couple of mine. is there room for assange Hysterical
seriously, is the Australian Gov paying to house them there and if so how much?
is there a maximum stay in order to facilitate a move to the mainland in a way that is quick and feasible. equador can do political asylum in a few weeks and though the cases may not be as clear cut, the humanitarian grounds are much much more compelling. i see no problem with what they're doing as long as it isn't used as a dustbin. they have rights to closed borders the same as any country so i think a lot of the uproar is a little unfair. i also suspect that while many genuinely seek political asylum many are just trying too escape poverty.
