forum shoutboxes

what do you think of them. (and no we won't be having one here)
on forums. usually the home page. personally i hate them and find them to be counterproductive. i see them on many sites though.

Just like IRC channels, they tend to produce writing that is even worse then what you get in forum postings.

i agree. you often get mods using them to discuss things as well.
i just can't see a use for them.

I saw the other a forum with an IRC feature included ( a bit like shout box but more developed :o )

Ya, cowards, pretty much all of them. Your normal shit slingers. Not much for irc channel's myself. They certainly do nothing for posting in the forums. If the site goes down there's a place to get in touch is about the best bullshit excuse i have heard for them to be used. Must be something wrong with windows live hotmail or yahoo. It's not like we are discussing anything that's actually worth someone stealing and selling for big bucks so security is a bit of, no a lot of horse shit from a lot of big feeling nobody's. JMO

nope. the sewer will always be the sewer and everyone will have that luxury there. everyone will also bear the brunt of any repercussions without any help as such from mods :p
in there we're all on our own.

Shout boxes are a stupid waste of server load when you can get together on irc and do the slandering. Oh and btw you dont need irc for that when you have a pm system at the forum, but then again that is a load on the forum server, so why not take it out on msn?

As far as irc goes its a beautiful lo-tek way of communicating live - you can do it from a 1980ties pc in command line. The question you need to ask yourselves is why does msn (and shoutbox) eat up that many resources when the functinality is basically the same???

though i think irc take people away from posting in the forums some of the times.
