Soon enough
there will be on forty nine perfect beings
immortals inside a terrestrial sphere
watched over by octagons of eyes
they will live in transparent cubes
soundproofed for their constant meditation
unperturbed by any universal sin
visiting the adjacent pyramids
at whose summits will burn a clear blue flame
the last of the sky and the source
of their deathlessness.

Outside the sphere, the teeming billions,
Homo Telos, will procreate and die,
feeding on each other until the earth
is again a forgiven paradise, and Homo Katharos
can disappear one by one until at last
it will seem as if God existed after all.

Triangles (a villanelle)

In corners sharp, a triangle resides,
Three angles meet with symmetry's grace.
Geometric dance, where logic abides.

Lines intersect in mathematical strides,
A shape of balance in every case.
In corners sharp, a triangle resides.

Equilateral, equiangular guides,
A figure solid, in every space.
Geometrical dance, where logic abides.

Isosceles whispers in triangular tides,
Unequal edges find their place.
In corners sharp, a triangle resides.

Pythagorean theorem subtly provides,
Hypotenuse stretches for embrace.
Geometrical dance, where logic abides.

In the realm of shapes, this form decides
A mathematical emblem to embrace.
In corners sharp, a triangle resides,
Geometrical dance, where logic abides.

A Möbius strip
is a ring with a twist
which if you trace on it
has only one side
and only one edge.

What no one will say
though it’s plainer than day
is that at any point
it’s got two distinct sides
and two distinct edges.

A little like history:
if you define
the direction you’re going
as progress there’s only
one side.  But the fact is
each now there are two.

What does a midlife crisis look like
I know I wasn't okay in high school
Or the 10 years after, panic attacks
In my 30s, hopelessness in my 50s
Bold retaliation 40s, indecent shape
From never affording luxury foods
And constant physical exercise from
Labor intensive sources of income
That constantly remind me they don't
need me.  They provide all my needs.
But what about the need to stop.

Is it the reevaluation of your needs?
What do you need.  Right now.

If you keep your eyes
closed for long enough,
you will dream of peace
as well. You will see her
dangle her feet above
a course of water glistening between
sea and sea or lake and sea,

go ahead! Cast your line
or draw some liquid to your lips:
she will smile when you spit.
She is a horn weaving crowns
of spikenards, roses, laurel leaves.
She is a circle riffling through
the pages of an endless book.
She is a square searching with her eyes
for stones to shape and pile.

The Final Frontier

Shouldn't be long now
before I can get myself
a supersonic drone
with bitchin' batteries
down at the local Best Buy
and finally prove to you sheep
the goddamn earth is flat.
